HIDEOUT
Early in 2021 we began a conversation with Adam Farricker at HideOut Youth Zone in East Manchester.
HideOut is an amazing charity dedicated to supporting young people by providing somewhere for them to go, something to do and someone to talk to. It provides the young people with the means and the belief to aim for careers that they previously might consider out of their reach.
Inside the impressive, purpose-built Youth Zone building, the young people are welcomed by friendly, qualified staff and a team of committed volunteers. They have the opportunity to take part in over 20 activities, including sports, arts, music, media, dance, drama and much more. Employability workshops and support are available for any young people who need help getting into employment, education or training.
Hideout can effectively open up pathways for young people who otherwise might find it difficult to find their way into their chosen job through no fault of their own.
Adam and his team were looking to create a film to attract potential funding for the charity and approached Kilogramme via Linked in.
Head of Youth Work, Joseph Amos, arranged for us to meet up with a group of young people at the centre and after chatting to them about what they might like to do as a career, we came up with the idea of them talking about their aspirations, accompanied by an older animated version of themselves in their chosen job.
Knowing we wanted to use a combination of live-action footage and animation, we chose to collaborate with the talented Matt Smith of Daylight Moving Image video production company. https://day-light.co.uk/.
We spent two days filming at the centre, gathering some wonderful footage and then based on our rough storyboard, started work on an animatic.
Our designer had great fun creating character designs of the older versions and then the animators brought them to life as they interacted with their younger selves!
The film was shown to great acclaim at their Patrons dinner in September.
This was another great project to work on and if we have encouraged more sponsorship for this wonderful place, then that makes us very proud.
